GETDOT changed the life of Barbara Charles forever.
She didn’t know a soul (with the exception of her daughter) when she moved to the capital city in 2009. Learning about our organization from Facebook, she walked into her first networking event and her isolation was extraordinarily short-lived. She was immediately greeted and welcomed by a group of people.
“It has been a fun, comfortable home for me ever since. I love going to the events and donating gift baskets to the silent auctions to help support their community outreach,” she said.
And she’s been repaying the kindness to the community ever since.
One of the friendliest faces you’ll see at a GETDOT event, this small business owner is someone you definitely want to meet. Charles founded her own human resources organization, Flex HR, and is very adept at connecting the right people with the right organizations.
She founded her business in 2014 in order to be her own boss and provide fast, fluid, flexible (her mantra for the HR teams she led during her corporate career) human resources solutions for small to mid-sized organizations.
“I have almost 20 years of progressive experience managing HR functions for public, private and non-profit organizations in a variety of industries including retail, manufacturing, distribution and professional services and enjoy sharing that knowledge with organizations that are looking for HR and strategic planning assistance,” she said.
Her main goals for the company have been to provide needed HR and strategic planning services to organizations that did not have access to these skills in-house, make a positive contribution to the community I live in, and provide balance in her life.
Check, check, and check.
“I am happy to say that Flex HR is meeting those goals,” she said.
Some of Flex HR’s key areas of expertise and applied knowledge include strategic planning, talent and performance management, training and facilitation, organizational and leadership development, conflict resolution, executive coaching, compliance audits and documentation and benefit and compensation design and implementation.
“I particularly enjoy working with non-profits as that combines my skills in HR and social work and allows me to work with organizations that help others and give back to our community,” Charles said. The entrepreneur hopes you’ll approach her and say hello at the next event. She loves meeting new faces!
“I have met so many wonderful people that are now going to be life-long friends. These people are one of the reasons I am happy to call Columbus home and I look for the new faces at events so that I can pay it forward,” she said.
New to GETDOT? No worries. Charles offered some important advice.
“I remember my first event and how I was nervous and a little intimidated because I really didn’t know anyone there,” she recalled. “Just head into the crowd, look for one smiling face and introduce yourself! We are a very friendly group. Or just look for me! I wear my GETDOT name tag and am always happy to have a new friend in my life!”
